Traditional medicine has historically called for the use of Opiates and Benzodiazepines to manage both acute and chronic pain. These medications, although effective, can lead to physical and psychological dependence, with an escalating need the longer the medication is used. Benzodiazepines are commonly abused due to their toxic effect and widespread availability. The abuse can be chronic or can often be seen in emergency situations of intentional or accidental overdose.

 Stopping these medications abruptly can be very dangerous, as the withdrawal symptoms are quite severe. It is imperative that detoxification be done in a safe and structured environment under the care and supervision of experienced Physicians and Health Care Professionals.
